About Joining the Republic of Korea Air Force as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician
When I stepped outside, I noticed that there are hardly any airmen around, and mostly Army and Marine Corps personnel are visible. Even though there shouldn't be that many Marines, it might be a regional characteristic, but there seem to be a lot of veterans from the Marine Corps.
However, when it comes to aircraft maintenance personnel in the Air Force, people often say, "Have you ever seen a plane?" or "What could a soldier do to see a plane? They probably just stood guard." If I try to respond, it feels like I'm arguing, and I don't want to seem like I'm just talking nonsense because I didn't do anything significant, so I end up just saying, "Yes, yes..." and muddling through.
In reality, even those who live outside the flight line don’t know what those who work inside the line do, even though they are in the same airbase. Our airbase is small, so we ate lunch together with the soldiers outside the line in the soldier's dining hall.
I’ve been to several places on business trips, but it’s unthinkable to eat lunch together with soldiers outside the line at other bases like we do at ours. Usually, soldiers inside the line either have their meals delivered to their unit or eat at a small dining hall near the line, so other specialties hardly ever see aircraft maintenance soldiers.
Aircraft maintenance is divided into three parts: field maintenance squadron, unit maintenance squadron, and depot maintenance. The field maintenance squadron mainly performs periodic inspections and addresses defects that the unit maintenance squadron couldn’t handle. Depot maintenance involves complete disassembly, inspection, reassembly, repainting, and test flights before being released. After returning from the depot, the field maintenance squadron inspects it again, tightens bolts, makes necessary adjustments, and then hands it back to the unit maintenance squadron.
The unit maintenance squadron conducts pre-flight and post-flight inspections to manage the aircraft. Despite seeming simple, it’s the busiest place because they manage most of the aircraft's time-sensitive components. When it's time to replace these components, they get swamped with calls from everywhere. Then the field maintenance squadron goes around replacing these time-sensitive parts.
So what do the maintenance soldiers do? They assist with maintenance work. Because they serve for two years, they mainly assist, and by the time they get to the more straightforward tasks during their senior year, it's about time to be discharged. This period is when it gets interesting, but then they discharge. It’s inevitable for soldiers. The same goes for NCOs (Non-Commissioned Officers); no one would trust them with tasks from the beginning. NCOs start with assisting tasks just like soldiers. Because of the overlap in tasks, conflicts often arise between soldiers and NCOs. It’s unavoidable since both are passionate about their work, and it’s not necessarily anyone’s fault.
The point is that soldiers are not just assistants; NCOs also assist with maintenance for 2-3 years. It’s not like soldiers clean the workroom and prepare for tasks in the morning; NCOs also check equipment and prepare outside the workshop before work starts. However, there are some NCOs who don’t do this and just write down the inspection date quickly and go to sleep inside. It’s very frustrating.
Similarly, soldiers need to obtain military certifications to assist with maintenance without difficulty. Before obtaining these, they feel hesitant to get into the cockpit or climb on the aircraft because they fear judgment from civilians. Even after obtaining these certifications, the fear of being questioned, like "Do you have the cockpit access certification?" remains, especially if the civilian supervisors don’t clarify it.
There are about 13 military certifications an aircraft maintenance soldier needs to acquire, including cockpit access, liquid oxygen, GPU (Ground Power Unit) operation, guided missile, and guided missile assembly. By the time they acquire all these, they’re about to be discharged. If someone like me, who is not good at lying and is shy, struggles, they end up memorizing the material for days or even a month to pass the written and practical exams. If they fail more than three times, they might face restrictions on leave, so they have no choice but to work hard and eventually succeed.
